One Direction star Liam Payne tragically died in Argentina last month

Cheryl Tweedy joined the many mourners at the funeral of 31-year-old singer Liam Payne on Wednesday, where she paid a final goodbye to the father of her seven-year-old, Bear.

It's been reported Cheryl played a key role in helping to plan the former One Direction's star's send-off following his tragic death last month.

Payne died in Argentina after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony on October 16.

The news shocked fans worldwide, with Payne's family and friends since having to come to terms with the devastating loss.

While Tweedy and Payne split back in 2018, they remained close over the shared love of their son.

The former Girls Aloud star was pictured this week looking heartbroken as she joined mourners at the service, which took place at St Mary's Church in Amersham, Buckinghamshire.

It's been reported Tweedy struggled with the heart-wrenching decision as to whether or not Bear should attend the funeral of his beloved father.

Ultimately, the 41-year-old decided the youngster should be present art the service despite her apprehension, The Mirror reports.

A source close to Tweedy said the former X Factor judge has also vowed Bear will never forget his dad.

Speaking to MailOnline, they added: "She has her own grief, but she also has a little boy who won't see his daddy again, and that is just heartbreaking."

The grief of Payne's family was highlighted with floral tributes at the funeral, with one reading "son" and another heartbreakingly spelling out "daddy".

Tweedy reminded the public of her son's loss a few days after Payne's death when she released a social media statement.

Taking to Instagram a few days after the tragic incident, Tweedy wrote: "Liam was not only a pop star and celebrity, he was a son, a brother, an uncle, a dear friend and a father to our seven year old son."

She shared a touching snap of Payne snuggled in bed with Bear, now seven, when he was a baby.

The full heartbreaking statement reads: "As I try to navigate this earth shattering event, and work through my own grief at this indescribably painful time, I'd like to kindly remind everyone that we have lost a human being."

Liam was not only a pop star and celebrity, he was a son, a brother, an uncle a dear friend and a father to our 7 year old son.

"A son that now has to face the reality of never seeing his father again.

"What is troubling my spirit the most is that one day Bear will have access to the abhorrent reports and media exploitation we have seen in the past two days.

"It is breaking my heart further that I cannot protect him from that in his future.

"I am begging you to consider what use some of these reports are serving, other than to cause further harm to everyone left behind picking up the pieces.

"Before you leave comments or make videos, ask yourself if you would like your own child or family to read them.

"Please give Liam the little dignity he has left in the wake of his death to rest in some peace at last. Thank you, Cheryl."
