Editorial director Clare Pizey has announced her departure from the motoring show

The future of Top Gear has long been under the spotlight ever since host Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff was airlifted to hospital in December 2022.

The accident reportedly left Flintoff "seriously emotionally and physically affected" and while he still remains part of the show, editorial director Clare Pizey will not be.

She announced she was was stepping down from the role eight months on from Flintoff's horror crash.

Pizey penned on Instagram alongside a series of snaps of her with some of the BBC's stars: "So after many many years at the BBC, I have decided it’s time for a new chapter.

"Somehow, I have spent 7 years on Top Gear - how did that happen - and that was after Children in Need and Sport Relief to name but a few highlights.

"It has been extraordinary in every way and I am so grateful to the incredibly talented production teams and presenters I have worked with along the way. It has been a privilege."

A spokesperson from the BBC addressed Pizey's exit although failed to mention how it would affect the future of the show.

They said: "Top Gear's editorial director Clare Pizey is leaving BBC Studios after seven years.

"With co-executive producer Alex Renton, Clare reinvented and re-energised the motoring entertainment show with the introduction of Paddy [McGuinness], Freddie and Chris [Harris] – and she oversaw Top Gear's hugely successful move to BBC One in 2020.

"During her time at BBC Studios Clare also executive produced Children in Need, Sport Relief and Top Gear spin-off format The Getaway Car.

"We wish her the very best of luck with her next adventure."

However, there have been numerous reports that Pizey's exit combined with Flintoff's recovery could put the show's future in doubt.

A number of celebrities who'd worked with Pizey were quick to comment on her farewell post.

McGuinness wrote in response: "Who’s going to hold my hand on the plane!?!?

"Thank you for everything ma lady. Roll on the next adventure! xxx PS you worked with David Baddiel’s brother?

While Carol Vorderman weighed in: "Well I've no doubt whatsoever that it will be a bright and interesting new chapter, sending huge love."

And Dermot O'Leary also commented: "Such a pleasure and a highlight working with you. Lovely memories xx." (sic)

Flintoff's accident occurred during filming at the Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey in December last year.

The former cricketer had to be airlifted to hospital with facial injuries and broken ribs after the open-topped three-wheel 130mph Morgan Super 3 that he was driving flipped over.
