The host and a particular feature of the quiz show came under fire during the latest episode

BBC quiz show Mastermind has sparked annoyance among viewers following a Monday's semi-final episode.

Fans took to social media to express their frustration over what they described as "ridiculously long" questions from host Clive Myrie.

The backlash, which has always been typical of the long-running show, seemed to be intensified as it erupted just minutes into the programme.

Viewers argued that the wordy questions prevented players from having enough time to answer more questions and potentially earn higher scores.

Critics were particularly vocal about the impact on contestants' ability to demonstrate their knowledge.

Within the opening moments, the semi-final instalment triggered a flood of social media complaints, with X, formerly Twitter, soon awash with similar grievances.

One disgruntled fan wrote: "These #mastermind questions are ridiculously long.

"I know it gets said over and over, and I guess it's to ensure consistency but it makes the whole quiz feel clunky."

A second viewer suggested a practical solution to the perceived problem.

They proposed: "Extraordinarily long questions on #Mastermind. It would be better if the questions were shorter so that the contestants have a chance of answering more questions and getting more points."

The viewer then added a pointed jab at the show's host, suggesting: "Otherwise, call the show the Clive Myrie Talking Show."

"Why do the questions have to be so long? #mastermind," another asked.

"The questions on #UniversityChallenge are much better than the #Mastermind questions which were uber long tonight," someone else added later.

The feedback from the last episode of the series wasn't all negative though, with several other viewers expressing how much they enjoyed the Monday night favourite.

"What am I going to watch now for half an hour instead of that chess c**p? #mastermind," one wrote.

"Proper quality on #mastermind," someone else praised. (sic)

The quiz show often prompts debate, with a recent episode sparking a fiery argument over what should be allowed.

The episode, which aired earlier this month, saw teacher Gary Austin’s topic of choice become the subject of debate.

He'd chosen to be tested on TV sitcom Friday Night Dinner, but many viewers argued entertainment shows shouldn't be available as a topic on the serious quiz programme.
