The former BBC News presenter pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children

The BBC has confirmed that it has asked Huw Edward to return the salary he raked in after being arrested.

The newsreader took home approximately £200,000 since he was arrested on child abuse image charges back in November.

BBC Chair Samir Shah said that Edwards "behaved in bad faith" and that the corporation believed he had taken his salary despite knowing he was to plead guilty to the offences.

The 63-year-old raked in his pay cheque for five months after he was arrested for making indecent images of children.

The BBC hasn't said whether or not it will pursue legal proceedings if Edwards refuses to pay back his salary.

Edwards was suspended in July last year and arrested four months later but did not resign from the BBC until April this year on "medical" grounds.

He has faced calls to return his BBC salary ever since he pleaded guilty at Westminster Magistrates' Court, including from former BBC News colleague, Jennie Bond.

With the topic becoming the subject of national debate, Bond appeared on Jeremy Vine's Channel 5 show to state: "Frankly, if Huw has any dignity left then he would hand some of the money back, certainly the £200,000 he has made since his arrest.

"I think it would be gracious of him to do that. I don't think there is any legal recourse for the BBC.

"I think we have to remember that the BBC as a whole is being tarnished and reputationally this is very damaging.

"But I think you and I both know Jeremy that the newsroom is - quite rightfully - separate from the corporation itself. I know it's quite a hard division to make but we in the news without fear or favour question the bosses at the BBC and that's entirely right.

"So in the newsroom itself, they were kept in the dark right until this week which is extraordinary."

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy also waded into the debate, similarly stating Huw Edwards should return the £200,000 to the BBC.

The offences are alleged to have taken place between 2020 and 2022 and relate to 37 images that were shared on a WhatsApp chat, according to the Metropolitan Police.
