The Emmy-winning actor did following a brief illness

Tributes from far and wide have flooded in for actor Andre Braugher following his death at the age of 61 on Monday evening.

His publicist confirmed Braugher died following a brief illness.

Braugher was best known in recent years for his role as the hard-faced yet lovable police chief in the sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine alongside Andy Samberg and Terry Crews.

In the '90s, he became a household name for his role as Frank Pembleton in the award-winning drama Homicide: Life on the Street.

Fans across the globe have since shared their messages of condolence to Braugher's friends and family, and now a number of his on-screen colleagues have followed suit.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Chelsea Peretti, who played Gina Linetti in the series, penned on Instagram: "Love you. Will miss your dulcet tones. Forever lucky to have gone on such a journey with you. Ringside seat.

"You were so funny to me and the epitome of still waters run deep. I will always cherish our conversations, often with me hanging in your doorway barring your exit, and the insane opportunity to be your sidekick.

"Is it weird that I am also grieving for what Captain Holt meant to Gina? I really hoped and knew I would see you again. Hate that I won’t."

Colleague Terry Crews shared a tribute of his own: "Can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent.

"This hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship.

"Deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like. Rest In Peace, Andre. I love you, man."

Meanwhile, Kyra Sedgwick, who played Braugher's on-screen nemesis Madeline Wuntch in the comedy, also took to Instagram.

Alongside one of Braugher's headshots and then a snap of them both, Sedgwick penned: "Heartbroken to hear about the passing of the brilliant Andre Braugher. Sending love to all his family and friends.

"Playing his other half in Brooklyn Nine-Nine will forever be one of the highlights of my career."

Award-winning actor Viola Davis also paid tribute on the social media platform as she wrote: "Heartbreaking. You went way too soon.

"I loved every minute of working with you....your talent, your bottomless heart, your love of your family....your wife.

"You were a great man. God bless your children, your beautiful wife.....You will be missed Andre Braugher."

Brooklyn Nine Nine's Stephanie Beatriz shared a heartbroken emoji in response to Davis's message.
