Labour’s shadow employment minister Alison McGovern spoke to GB News

Labour’s shadow employment minister Alison McGovern has said the Labour Party would improve the nation’s health through improving the NHS, public transport and better jobs.

Alison McGovern said she believed ‘work was good for people’ and said Labour have allocated £85m for one thousand careers advisors in schools.

In an interview with GB News, Alison McGovern said: "Rishi Sunak said he didn't believe that our country is sicker than it had been before. And I think that's just not the realistic opinion of anybody who speaks to people.

“We have become more unwell so we need to get our NHS functioning properly. We need across the whole of government policy to help people have healthier lives.

“That means public transport, and crucially in my area, it means good jobs. So we should encourage everybody into work. I think work is good for people and make sure that those jobs that they do help them to sustain a good and healthy life.

“And I think that good work and good health are two sides of the same coin. So, our plan is, tackle the NHS crisis that we're in, get people into work, make sure there are good jobs that can sustain people with decent family finances and also good health. And I think that that is the way to return our public finances to better health as well.

“Careers advice in our schools has been absolute chaos for the past 14 years. We used to have a service called Connections, which got shut down and it's been total chaos. We don't really know what's going on.

“We want to get the simple things working well again, so we've got £85 million that we've earmarked for 1000 careers advisors.

“Crucially, though, our kids have got to do work experience. We need to get children and young people to experience the world of work so that they can see the possibilities.

“So we will make sure that that curriculum is good so that it helps children have the confidence and they get that work experience so that when they leave school, they know what the options are and they can move into one of those better jobs that I was talking about. And that's a massive part of our plan to get our country working again.”
