A British sailor has been found dead on a Greek island with head injuries which left local police “puzzled”.

The unnamed 44-year-old was found dead in a bay area of Spetses.


The island, located off the coast of the Peloponnese, in the Argolic Gulf, was hosting the annual classic yacht regatta.

Sailors descended on the island between June 26 and June 29.

However, the man was found with injuries on the left side of his head.

An official said: “There was a gash to the left side of his head, a wound that is puzzling us.

“He seems to have been hit. We hope to have answers soon because right now it is a mystery as to how he died.”

The circumstances of his death have not yet been made clear.

However, the coastguard revealed his death was confirmed at a local hospital.

The body is now expected to be transferred to a coroner's office at the port city of Piraeus.

Spetses is a small island with a population of just over 3,700 in the Saronic Islands group.

The annual regatta is particularly popular and was founded more than a decade ago in 2011.

It takes place every June and accomodates for around 400 attendees.

Many people use the event as an opportunity to show off rate traditional wooden boats in Greek and Latin styles.

The tailor’s tragic death comes weeks after health writer Dr Michael Mosley passed away from “heat exhausation” after “sitting down and losing consciousness” while walking across the Greek island of Symi.

Dr Mosley, 67, was found in a rocky area at the resort of Agia Marina on June 9 after a five-day search.
