Mass protests have been sparked across the UK following a mass stabbing incident in Southport

The elite class "do not understand" the true impact of multiculturalism on Britain today, leading pollster Matt Goodwin has told GB News.

Fresh debate on mass immigration and racism has been sparked in recent days after anti-immigration and anti-racist demonstrations sparked by a crazed knife attack in Southport, where three young girls were killed.

Speaking to GB News, Goodwin claimed that the protests and riots are an outlet for Britons to "articulate their sense that there is something being lost" and "express their voice".

He added that the elite classes "don't get it" and believe that Britain is a "celebration of diversity and multiculturalism".

Speaking to GB News reporter Steve Edginton, Goodwin explained: "So many people have been rebelling politically and socially, and unfortunately in some cases physically in recent years.

"Because they can't quite articulate that they have a sense that there is something being lost, and they need to express their voice in order to reassert that identity against an elite class that doesn't quite get it."

Noting the diverse communities across the UK and the current surge in numbers of illegal migrant Channel crossings, Goodwin argued that Britain's identity is being "diluted" due to a "broken" multicultural system.

Goodwin told GB News: "Most people out there hold a much more nuanced view of who we are, including the English, where they say, actually, for a large number of people, ancestry is very important.

"As is the shared traditions, culture, values, the language, and respecting the rule of law."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Criticising the belief of the "elites" that the country's identity is based on multiculturalism, Goodwin fumed: "This comes down to the deeper question of what is it that makes us, us now.

"The kind of elite class would say it's about the celebration of diversity, it's about the celebration of multiculturalism. I would push back on that and say, well, if the only thing that makes us is that we celebrate welcoming others, it's like saying you don't really have an identity of your own.

"If the only thing that is defining our national identity is that we celebrate diversity, who are we?"

Goodwin also stressed that many Britons would "push back" on the argument that the country does not have a distinctive identity.

Offering his counter-argument, Goodwin explained: "Many people in England and Britain would reject it and say, no, we do have something that is distinctive and unique, and exclusive to us. Which is why I think so many people have been rebelling.

"They're not saying you have to be white to be English or British, but they are saying, actually, on balance, we think that if you're in this national community, you should respect and have some linkage to that community.

"You should certainly respect the traditions and the culture and the values of that community. And you should be concerned about the decline of that community."
