Conditions are expected to become very wet and windy

Forecasters are warning Britons to brace for heavy rain and thundery conditions as the weather takes a turn after a warm bank holiday weekend.

Conditions are expected to become very wet and windy next week after a mix of sunny spells and showers on Saturday.

The Met Office suggest the remainder of August is likely to be "generally unsettled", with showers or longer spells of rain affecting most of Britain.

Weather maps show a push of heavy showers and potential thunderstorms crossing from France outwards southern and southeastern England early next week.

Weather experts say storms further south and east looks more likely, even staying offshore in the English Channel/southern North Sea.

The wet weather follows a mixed bank holiday weekend with some sunny spells but much lower temperatures with highs of 18C on Saturday.

Northern Britain will see maximum temperatures ranging from 14-17C while Wales will feel cooler with 13-17C, according to weather maps.

Met Office forecasters say it is likely to be a mixed end to the month with some sunshine possible, but the potential for cloud and a few scattered showers.

A spokesperson said: "Rain and showers could move into the north-west of the country over the bank holiday weekend, proceeding east and south across the country into the following week."

Temperatures are expected to be close to, or a little below, average for the time of year.

Netweather forecast Jo Farrow said: "If you were hoping for some late summer heat, it’s across in mainland Europe again where this summer has been extreme.

"We get a showery northerly flow, with only sunny spells giving warmth."

"The UK rainfall over the next few days will mostly be from showery outbreaks from the west (particularly in the northwest) until the new little low moves through on Wednesday/Thursday with frontal rain."

The Met Office added that September will see changeable conditions similar to August.

A long range forecast suggests: "Early September is likely to stay changeable, with a mixture of sunny spells and showers. Western areas have a higher likelihood of more frequent wet conditions, but showers are possible throughout the country.

"Temperatures are expected to remain close to average throughout the period, although it may feel cool under any prolonged cloud or rain."
