Britons visiting Sweden in the coming week have been warned of potential threats in the country

Sweden is a beautiful place with lots of history, nature and sites for holidaymakers to enjoy and more people may be gearing up to visit ahead of Eurovision.

A warning has been shared before of the event as there is a higher risk of protests and disrupted travel.

The Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has urged Britons to stay alert and follow the latest updates and advice if visiting in the coming days.

It stated: "The Eurovision song contest will take place in Malmö from 4 May to 11 May. There will be a greater number of people in Malmö during this time.

"Travel around the city may be affected by travel control systems or protests. See safety and security information if you plan to be in Malmö, or attending the event.

"If you are planning to attend see the Eurovision song contest website for information about ticketing and practical guidance on how to travel around the city.

"Also check information from the Swedish authorities on the kriseinformation website [and] sign up to get email alerts when the FCDO updates this Sweden travel advice page."

The UK Government body added protests are more likely during this time so Britons should be aware of this when travelling through the country.

It added: "Demonstrations in Sweden are usually peaceful. There are likely to be an increased number of protests in Malmö during Eurovision week.

"Where more than one protest happens at the same time, on opposing issues, clashes can occur. Protests can block access routes.

"Avoid demonstrations wherever possible and follow the advice of the local authorities. For more details, see the Swedish Police website."

This comes as Britons visiting Turkey have been warned that they face a risk of "fines or prison sentence" as temperatures rise.

“If there is a wildfire in your area, local authorities may tell you to leave your accommodation. Follow the directions of local authorities.

“You could get a fine or prison sentence for lighting a fire of any kind or discarding cigarettes in risk areas such as woodland. Barbecues are prohibited in these areas.”

Britons should avoid doing anything that would put them at risk and follow advice from local authorities.
