The most beautiful places for a holiday have been shared, according to experts, with a British staycation spot topping the list

Britons go on holiday to relax, take in new cultures and see something they haven't seen before.

The most picturesque European destinations for a city break was shared and it was historical London that took the crown.

The list was put together by combining the number of city break related hashtags on Instagram with how many tags each city had to find the most Instagrammable spots.

London is home to many historical sites, including Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge and the Shard, as well as plenty of lush parks to stroll through.

Paris was the highest-ranking city outside of the UK and it is famed for landmarks including the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre Museum.

A spokesperson said: “Knowing which city to choose for your next trip can be difficult, especially if you desire an aesthetically pleasing destination for your social media posts.

"All capitals offer something different, whether it be from a historical monument to stores filled with designer clothing.

"These findings are a great way to indicate which destinations are the most suitable to your taste.”

The FCDO said: "Attacks could be indiscriminate including in places visited by foreigners, such as public buildings, places of worship, airports and large public gatherings (including major events, public holidays, and religious occasions).
