Switch 2 starts from £395.99 in the UK

Preorders for Nintendo Switch 2 will begin on April 8 ahead of the UK release date on June 5, 2025.

Ahead of launch, there will be two options available to Nintendo fans — a standalone Switch 2 console for £395.99 or a bundle with Switch 2 + a download code for Mario Kart World for £429.99.

The latter is a decent launch deal. If you want to buy the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sequel at a later date, Nintendo will charge £66.99 for a digital copy from the eShop and £74.99 for the physical release. As such, you'll save £32.99 compared to buying the console and the digital copy of Mario Kart World separately.

Hidden in the T&Cs, Nintendo has revealed that its Switch 2 console bundle with Mario Kart World is a limited edition item. Yes, really. "Limited-time production through autumn 2025," the small print on the My Nintendo Store website confirms, "Available while supplies last".

It's unclear exactly when in "autumn 2025" that Nintendo will ditch its Mario Kart World bundle.

It could be a technique to increase sales in the first few months of the console's lifecycle. The success of the launch could determine whether the combo will stick around until the Christmas shopping rush — when we'd expect to see sales of a new console increase dramatically.

Nintendo has a limited production and timed availability to drive-up interest and sales before. The Japanese gaming giant used the same strategy for the launch of its Super Mario 3D All-Stars game on Switch back in September 2020.

eShop listing for the Super Mario All-Stars collection showing the date its release was removed to drive up scarcity

The "limited" timeframe for the Switch 2 bundle isn't the first time that Nintendo has deliberately limited the supply of a hotly-anticipated product... it celebrated the 35th anniversary of its iconic plumber with the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection, which was removed from its digital storefront after six months

The game, which was a collection of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy, was only available as a physical release until March 31, 2021. Digital copies sold via the Nintendo eShop on Switch were discontinued on April 1, 2021.

This artificial scarcity created urgency, driving rapid sales, with over 5.2 million copies sold in two weeks. The limited run of physical copies dramatically inflated resale prices too.

Many criticised this tactic as anti-consumer, forcing rushed purchases and enabling scalpers to exploit shortages. Fans questioned the removal of digital availability, expecting it to remain accessible since there's no distribution cost — unlike producing the physical cartridges used for physical Nintendo Switch releases.

The unknown deadline for the Switch 2 + Mario Kart World download code bundle could be seen as a return to Nintendo’s scarcity-driven marketing.

Nintendo Switch 2 Console With Mario Kart World Bundle Listing on Smyths Toys Website With Price

Smyths Toys is one of UK retailers that has listed the Switch 2 console on its website ahead of the June 5 release date ...but has marked the new arrival as "Out Of Stock" already

Outside of the Nintendo online store, several UK retailers have launched preorders for the Switch 2 ahead of the June 5 release date. ShopTo is charging 1p to reserve a spot in the queue for the successor to the Nintendo Switch. That deposit will be taken off the final balance on dispatch.

HMV, EE, Currys, and SimplyGames UK have also published listings of the Switch 2 bundles.

Smyths Toys has launched its Nintendo Switch 2 preorder page — but has updated the listing to claim that it's now "Out Of Stock".

For those who missed the hour-long Nintendo Direct presentation about the new console, Switch 2 arrives with a larger and higher resolution touchscreen display, a new black paint job, and magnetic detachable controllers.

Nintendo said the new console will also come with a range of new social features, centred around a new tool called GameChat, which allows players to voice or video chat with friends while playing.

The Japanese gaming giant also confirmed the new console will support the ability for players to share a game and play together with up to three friends, even if those friends do not own the game.

The much-anticipated console follows the original Nintendo Switch, which has proven hugely popular with gaming fans since it was released in 2017, with its hybrid home and mobile gaming system which allows players to carry the screen and detachable remote controls with them, as well as dock the device in a station at home to use it with a TV.

The original Switch has sold around 150 million units since its release.

The Switch 2 will support some backwards compatibility for a certain number of original Switch games, as well as a new type of game called Switch 2 Edition games – upgraded versions of existing games specially enhanced for the new console. Nintendo has not confirmed how much the optional upgrade will cost.

However, it revealed those with the Switch Online + Expansion Pass subscription, which costs £34.99 a year, will benefit from these improvements to games in their library at no additional cost.

During a livestream laying out details about the new console, Nintendo also announced a number of new games that would launch on the upcoming console, including Mario Kart World, an open-world twist on the popular racing series.

Ahead of the console’s launch, the gaming firm is to run hands-on events with the product in cities around the world. These will include an event at London Excel between April 11 - 13, 2025.

Nintendo president, Shuntaro Furukawa, said the Switch 2 was a “leap forward” for the company and its customers.

“Nintendo Switch 2 is the next step in at-home gaming that can be taken on the go based on eight years of play and discovery that began with Nintendo Switch,” he said. “With its new features that expand the possibilities of gaming experiences, I truly believe that Nintendo Switch 2 is a leap forward in our journey of putting smiles on the faces of everyone that Nintendo touches.”
