The coach was convicted for sexually abusing a teenager he was training in the late 1980s

The Paris Olympics have been hit by a second paedophile scandal, with Australian coach Brett Sutton allowed to work at the games despite sexually abusing a 13-year-old in the 1980s.

Sutton has been snapped with Julie Derron, who secured a silver for Switzerland in the triathlon race on Wednesday.

He appeared in an interview with Swiss TV channel RTS over the weekend where he hailed Derron for her triumph.

Sutton was wearing Olympic accreditation and was also seen wearing a red jacket with the Chinese flag and Olympic rings on it.

Back in 1999, Sutton pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual abuse of a 13-year-old Australian swimmer he had been coaching.

He was sentenced to two years in prison, which was suspended for three years.

A judge said Sutton had 'abused his role' as a coach, while also saying he'd operated in a 'gross and disgraceful way'.

International Olympic Committee spokesperson Mark Adams told a press conference on Sunday that Sutton was no longer in France.

He also said the IOC themselves would be investigating the matter.

“I understand that this person is no longer here at the Games, they have left the Games," he said.

“It is an issue for the Chinese Olympic Committee and the national federation will need to get involved.

“Looking forward I can tell you we will obviously look into this issue.”

A World Triathlon spokesperson also said: “Coaches are not accredited by us but by the National Olympic Committees, and approved by the IOC."

While Sutton was allegedly accredited by China, Olympians are free to choose whichever personal coach they wish to work with.

Per The Sun, he was barred from coaching by several Australian federations after his conviction in 1999.

He was also banned for life by USA Triathlon in 2021. He has been working in Switzerland for more than 20 years and charges around £780 a month for his services.
