The swimmer won a silver medal in the 100m breaststroke on Sunday night but tested positive for coronavirus the following day

Team GB star Matt Richards is hopeful Adam Peaty will be fully fit for the swimming relays following his recent positive Covid test at the Olympics.

The 29-year-old won silver in the 100m breaststroke on Sunday night, adding to his big medal haul in the process.

Peaty is a Team GB icon, with his silver meaning he's now claimed a total of six medals while representing his country at the Olympics.

The swimmer is currently isolating ahead of the mixed 4x100 medley relay heats, which are scheduled to take place on Friday, with the men's 4x100 medley heats pencilled in for 24 hours later.

And Richards, speaking on Tuesday, is hopeful Peaty will be able to take part in the events this weekend.

"Adam's OK, he's not dying. He's alright, just a bit of a cold. It's not fun but he'll get through it," he said.

"We'll avoid it as best we can."

Richards continued: "I've got no doubt on that. We've seen what he's done over the years.

"If it's possible to be at full strength he will be. That's all there is to it."

Peaty has won three Olympic gold medals throughout his career so far.

But while he could have been forgiven for feeling frustrated with silver on Sunday, that wasn't the case.

The Team GB star was just 0.02 seconds off retaining his title, only to be pipped to the prize by Italy's Nicolo Martinenghi.

Peaty celebrated with his three-year-old son, George.

And he was emotional as he spoke following the race, with the Olympian saying: "George normally goes, ‘Daddy, are you the fastest boy?’ and I would’ve said, ‘Not today’.

“But he says, ‘I love you Daddy’ And that’s all I care about.”

He continued: "I love the sport and I love how far it's taken me and the challenge every single day.

"The relationship I've got with this sport is: I'm all in. That comes at a cost of spending time with boy, spending time doing things I want to do as an older man."

"My heart is so happy and I am so grateful that I can theoretically lose and feel like I have still won."
