The 21-year-old is facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford

Mason Greenwood is reportedly being encouraged to speak publicly by those in his inner circle amid his uncertain future at Manchester United.

The 21-year-old has been absent from the first-team ever since being arrested in January 2022.

Greenwood had charges dropped against him back in February, with United then confirming they'd be conducting an internal investigation behind the scenes.

A final decision on the striker, who has played once for England, is expected by the time the new Premier League season begins.

And according to The Sun, Greenwood is being encouraged to speak publicly by those close to him.

A source is quoted as saying: “He’s being encouraged to speak publicly and to have his voice heard.

“But, privately, he has told those close to him that he has learned a huge amount.

“He became a father for the first time earlier this month and realises he has to grow up."

There have been suggestions that Adidas are open to United bringing Greenwood back into the fold.

This, according to the insider, is significant for Greenwood.

“He is grateful to Adidas — to have a sponsor like that in his corner means the world," they said.

However, Adidas themselves have shut down speculation they've held talks with United over a potential return for Greenwood.

They released a statement, via the Daily Star, that read: “After inaccurate and speculative reporting within the media it’s important for us to clarify that Adidas has had no discussions with Manchester United regarding any member of their playing squad.

"We play no role in any decisions made regarding any member of the team or staff at the club."

Greenwood's future remains up in the air.

However, teams such as Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan are eyeing the forward should United opt to loan him out.

Greenwood reportedly hoped for a swift return to United after the charges were dropped against him in February.

Yet that hasn't happened and he remains in limbo as the beginning of the season creeps closer.

Greenwood has scored 35 goals for United from 129 appearances since making his debut in a 3-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in 2019.

Meanwhile, amid talk Greenwood could leave on loan, former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan recently said that would be a 'sensible' move for all parties.

“It’s a way of giving the player an opportunity to play football and to take him out of the inevitable spotlight," he said last month.

“The tragedy for this boy is that it has all played out in the public domain before he was given the opportunity to have any sort of anonymity, i.e before you are in a position to be charged with something and then when you are charged then anonymity falls away.

“He was arrested and we all got to hear the audio of some of the circumstances the allegations were built around.

“That’s all fallen away and we can question the motivations about why it has fallen away and how we got ourselves into this situation."

He added: "The court of public opinion will make its own decisions about what they heard and what they know about this young man.

“That puts him in the way of a variety of challenges. "One of them is Manchester United’s perception of its image around the world and the other is what he’s going to be subjected to, by the very nature of what we know to be a very blunt, cruel and often appraisal of anything football fans can get at to try and disadvantage a player.

“With all those factors in play, I think it’s a sensible move. It’s not kicking the can down the road.”
