The broadcaster was left red-faced back in January as strange noises were heard during coverage of a match between Wolves and Liverpool

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have joked about the BBC's porn-gate scandal back in January this year.

Liverpool's FA Cup replay clash with Wolves was covered by the broadcaster and shown live on BBC1.

However, during coverage, Lineker and Shearer were left shocked when moaning noises started playing.

The two appeared to be amused before the BBC cut away and showed an interview with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp instead.

Now, speaking to FourFourTwo, Lineker and Shearer have joked about the moment they realised what was happening.

"I was interviewing Alan when it was actually going on," said Lineker.

Shearer then stated: "Yeah, I was on the co-coms [co-commentary].

"So I was inside the stadium. I could hear it, and there was a part of me thinking it was my phone!"

Lineker then interjected to joke: It's the porn he was listening to the night before!"

Shearer revealed he had been pranked by the moaning noise before - and was originally alarmed his phone had played the audio out loud by accident.

He continued: "I'd been tricked by people sending me that video so many times and I'm thinking: 'Has it gone off on my phone, in my pocket?'

"I tried to be professional and ignore it; I only started laughing when you [Lineker] started laughing!"

In the end, the BBC and their football pundits were able to get to the bottom of the matter.

Lineker took to X, formerly Twitter, to say a mobile phone had been taped to the back of the set.

He also said: "As sabotage goes it was quite amusing."

Many football fans were eager to know who had pulled off the mischievous prank.

And YouTuber Jarvo69, who has invaded football pitches in the past, then took responsibility.

Daniel Jarvis tweeted: "Yes, it was me that pranked the BBC Match of the Day with the sex Phone :) The video coming soon!!!!

"@BMWJARVO best prankster ever!!!!"

Jarvis also released a short video that showed him working behind the scenes at Molineux Stadium.

He livestreamed from his home and was watching Match of the Day, making calls to trigger the device.

The BBC later issued an apology that said: "We apologise to any viewers offended during the live coverage of the football this evening."

As for the football, Liverpool beat Wolves to make it through to the fourth round of the competition.

Harvey Elliot bagged the only goal of the game in the 13th minute.
