Xabi Alonso, former Liverpool midfielder and current Bayer Leverkusen manager, has returned to Anfield ahead of their Champions League clash with Liverpool.
Speaking at a press conference, Alonso addressed speculation about the Liverpool job, stating he "never gave any real consideration" to the vacant position after Jurgen Klopp announced his departure.
The Spaniard, who won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005, emphasised his focus at the time was on winning the Bundesliga with Leverkusen, a feat he achieved without a league defeat last term.
Alonso was full of praise for Liverpool's current form, describing them as "one of the best if not the best in Europe."

He highlighted the team's strong performances in both the Premier League and Champions League.
The Leverkusen boss acknowledged the challenge of facing Liverpool at Anfield, stating, "It's a good squad, good coach. At Anfield, it's a big challenge."
Alonso also commended Liverpool's new manager, saying, "The manager has done a fantastic job in three months."
He noted the team's numerous options across different positions, emphasising their strength in all areas.
Reflecting on his time at Liverpool, Alonso fondly recalled the 2005 Champions League victory.

"Even after almost 20 years, winning the Champions League, they remind me and us of that, for that night, that miracle and that was the beginning of something great that we started that year," he said.
The former midfielder described the triumph against AC Milan as "fantastic memories."
However, Alonso was quick to shift focus back to the present, stating, "I talked a little bit about it but not too much because I like to talk about our thing more now."
Alonso emphasised the importance of his team's preparation for the upcoming match.
