The Spaniard only took charge of the Hammers back in the summer

Harry Redknapp has blasted West Ham's treatment of Julen Lopetegui, with the Spaniard set to be sacked later today.

The former Wolves, Real Madrid and Sevilla boss only replaced David Moyes back in the summer, with the Hammers believing the grass would be greener with the 58-year-old in charge.

Since then, however, West Ham have struggled.

They're currently 14th in the Premier League table, just seven points clear of safety.

And West Ham were dire on Saturday as they lost 4-1 to Manchester City, with Vladimir Coufal's own goal and further efforts from Erling Haaland (x2) and Phil Foden consigning them to defeat.

Talk of Lopetegui being axed has rumbled on for a few days, now, with Graham Potter the frontrunner to take over.

And Redknapp, speaking to the BBC, has blasted the Hammers for their treatment of Lopetegui - branding it 'disrespectful'.

"It's disrespectful," he fumed. "If you want to get rid of him, you call and say I'm sorry it's not worked out.

"It's not an easy place to manage West Ham. The expectation there is very high.

"It's not only do they have to produce a winning team, they've got to produce a team that plays what West Ham fans see as the West Ham way."

A clear sign that West Ham look set to sack Lopetegui came on Wednesday when a news conference was cancelled at short notice.

Potter is now poised to come in, in what will be the 49-year-old's first job since being dismissed by Chelsea in April 2023.

The 49-year-old has also previously worked with Brighton, Swansea and Östersunds FK throughout his managerial career.

Meanwhile, speaking after City thrashed West Ham on Saturday, Lopetegui suggested he felt his side had been unfortunate to lose the clash.

"It's tough for me to explain the score," lamented the Spaniard.

“It’s true that we did a lot of good things. In my opinion, in the first half, we overcame a lot of things, but we didn’t take advantage of our good things and positive things.

“But the first goal was very, very unlucky. It was not about one moment when they dominated us or they had clear chances. It was one moment when it was one rebound [off Coufal’s boot into the net] and it was very unlucky for us.

“There was another key moment when Crysencio Summerville regained the ball in a very clear press and the referee whistled for a foul, but it was not at foul. It was very clear and had a very good press. It was a very clear chance for us, a one-on-one with the ‘keeper.

“So, when all the key moments work against you, against this kind of opponent, normally you are going to lose, but that’s why it’s not easy for me to explain the match.

“We had double the number of shots that Manchester City had, and that’s why it’s not easy to explain the score."
