The Plymouth Argyle manager has insisted the footage is misleading

Wayne Rooney has issued a statement denying claims that he let a "mystery woman" into his Devon flat, after a video of the incident went viral on social media over the weekend.

The former England striker took to Instagram to clarify that the footage, which shows him opening his apartment door whilst accompanied by a woman, actually depicts a couple who had given him a lift home.

In his Instagram post, Rooney wrote: "I am aware of a video circulating online.

"The video shows a man and woman looking around my apartment.

"The couple kindly gave me a lift home and were in there at the same time as my son who was visiting."

The 39-year-old added: "Footage is from last summer.

"It is annoying that at least one online newspaper has chosen to edit the footage to make it appear as though a woman entered the apartment on her own. That is simply not true."

Rooney is currently living in Devon whilst managing Championship side Plymouth Argyle, having rented an apartment miles away from his family home.

The Liverpool-born manager has been based in the South West since taking charge of Argyle earlier this year, with wife Coleen and their children remaining at their Cheshire mansion.

The viral video, which has garnered over two million views, shows Rooney wearing a baseball cap and tracksuit as he opens the door to his loft-style apartment, with a TV screen visible inside.

Additional images circulating online show the Plymouth Argyle manager drinking in a pub accompanied by two women and singing karaoke.

The footage has prompted significant attention, with at least one online newspaper suggesting Rooney had let a woman enter his apartment alone.

Rooney's position at Plymouth Argyle has come under increasing scrutiny, with the club struggling at the bottom of the Championship table.

The manager has won just five out of 25 games since taking charge, with pressure mounting following a recent 2-0 defeat against Oxford.

Speaking on Sunday about his future, Rooney said: "I think you have to look at every possible outcome.

"You have to feel you can turn it around, have you got the players to turn it around. Can I turn it around? Can the coaches turn it around?"
