The Italian admitted he felt his side had 'mentality' problems

Tottenham have posted a job advertisement on LinkedIn seeking a Men's First Team Lead Psychologist, just weeks after manager Roberto De Zerbi highlighted mental fragility within the squad.

The north London club, currently battling against Premier League relegation, published the vacancy on Tuesday as they look to strengthen their backroom staff.

This recruitment drive follows De Zerbi's candid assessment that his players are struggling with a "mentality problem" and lacking confidence as they fight to preserve their top-flight status.

The appointment comes shortly after it emerged Spurs were also recruiting for a Health and Wellbeing Executive position.

Spurs find themselves in the relegation zone with just five matches remaining in the campaign, having failed to secure a single Premier League victory throughout 2026.

Their predicament is precarious, sitting two points adrift of West Ham in the battle for survival.

The situation worsened last Saturday when Georginio Rutter struck in stoppage time to earn Brighton a draw, denying Tottenham two vital points in their desperate fight to stay up.

De Zerbi's side now face a crucial journey to Molineux this weekend, where they will take on Wolves, who have already been confirmed as relegated from the top flight.

The Brighton result left Tottenham's players devastated on the pitch, with several collapsing to the ground as Rutter's late effort found the net.

Xavi Simons appeared close to tears following the final whistle, while defender Kevin Danso, whose error led to the equaliser, was among those left crouching in despair.

The emotional fragility had been evident from De Zerbi's very first game in charge, a dismal 1-0 defeat at Sunderland's Stadium of Light.

Following that loss, the Italian manager acknowledged his squad was devoid of confidence and grappling with psychological challenges amid the mounting threat of dropping out of the Premier League.

The job listing outlines Tottenham's ambition to create a world-class performance environment at Hotspur Way, with the role requiring delivery of evidence-based psychological support to elite players.

"This role demands a practitioner who is credible, discreet, and highly effective in a Premier League environment, capable of building trust with players and coaches while operating with the professional rigor expected at the highest level of the game," the advertisement states.

The club has simultaneously advertised for a sports psychologist for their women's team.

Striker Richarlison has previously spoken openly about the value of psychological support, revealing in March 2024 that therapy "saved my life" and urging others facing mental health difficulties to seek help.
