The midfielder recently went down during a match between Bournemouth and Luton

Tom Lockyer has revealed he's set to discuss his future in football with specialists after his recent cardiac arrest.

A match between Bournemouth and Luton was recently called off after the 29-year-old went down, with fans inside the ground visibly concerned.

Lockyer suffered a cardiac arrest and, after previously collapsing in the final of the play-offs earlier in the year, it's unclear what the future holds.

The Wales international has now taken to social media to update fans, admitting he was due to hold discussions - while also thanking doctors and nurses for saving his life.

He also thanked everybody for their messages of support, too, and revealed the next steps were currently being taken.

"I would just like to say that I am doing very well and feeling very much myself after the cardiac arrest I suffered in Bournemouth," he said.

"The reason I’m doing so well is all down to the heroic actions of the players, staff, doctors and paramedics.

"I feel thankful that this happened to me surrounded by these heroes.

"They saved my life. I will never forget what you did for me.

"While I’m sad not to be involved, I feel full of pride watching the boys carry on the battle without me.

"The fighting spirit I’ve seen in the last three games has given me a much needed lift.

"I will be doing whatever I can in whichever ways are possible to help the Gaffer and the Club.

"In what capacity that is remains to be decided as I’m due to meet with specialists in the new year.

"I cannot stress enough how important it is for as many people as possible to know CPR.

"It literally saves lives, like mine.

"Please check out the British Heart Foundation website for basics or get yourself on a course. You just never know when you might need it.

"I have been overwhelmed by the support that I have received and thank you all for your messages, letters, gifts and well wishes.

"Seeing the banners at the ground and hearing my name being sung really did mean a lot to me and my family.

"Finally I would like to thank Bournemouth, Gary Sweet, Rob Edwards and Luton Town for the support they’ve given my family during this time.

"I hope that everyone has a very Happy New Year and best wishes for 2024."

Lockyer has been supported by Luton boss Rob Edwards during his time in hospital.

And Edwards, speaking before his side's 3-2 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday, revealed Lockyer was in 'good spirits' when quizzed on the defender.

“I speak to him every day," he revealed.

"He is progressing. He seems bored already, but in generally good spirits, which is really good.

“He was taking the mick out of my Christmas trainers against Sheff United, so yeah he is doing well.

“I think we were tight already, I don’t think it is because of what has happened that we’ve won two games of football.

“Performances have been good before that but they’re an incredibly tight group these lads and they’re like a family.

“And obviously one of the family had a really tough time a couple of weeks ago, so we all have to rally round each other, support each other and help.

"If that has brought us tighter, then good but the main thing is Tom in all of this.”
