Arne Slot's side are now eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table

Liverpool continued their charge towards the Premier League title with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Southampton on Sunday.

The Reds went ahead in the first half when Dominik Szoboszlai rifled a shot into the top corner in the 30th minute.

But Southampton then came roaring back to turn the match around, with Adam Armstrong scoring before another effort from Mateus Fernandes.

Mohamed Salah proceeded to draw Liverpool level with a neat finish, with the Egypt international then converting a penalty to secure all three points for his side. GB News now takes a look at four things we learnt from the clash at St Mary's.

VAR chiefs will be thankful

Prior to Armstrong's goal, the Southampton star was fouled with a penalty awarded as a result.

However, the incident actually appeared to take place outside of the box - rather than inside.

VAR chiefs ultimately stuck with the initial decision to reward a penalty yet Liverpool fans on social media were far from impressed.

Thankfully for Arne Slot's side, the controversy didn't come back to bite them with Salah showing why he's one of the best players in Premier League history with his terrific double.

Whether he gets the new contract he wants, however, remains to be seen...

Salah has to stay

It is surprising that, as things stand, Salah is set to leave Liverpool at the end of the campaign.

They would be foolish to let the former Chelsea, Roma and Fiorentina leave given his ridiculous goalscoring statistics - with the veteran as vital as ever.

Salah helped to turn the match around. His first goal was a brilliant finish, with the Liverpool star poking expertly past Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

And he took his penalty well, with the 32-year-old firing his effort into the top corner from 12 yards.

Liverpool show mentality of champions

The best teams win, even when they're not playing well.

And that's exactly what Liverpool did on Sunday. Though the Reds weren't at their swashbuckling best, they still had enough quality to reign supreme and claim all three points.

The title isn't won yet but it certainly looks as though they'll lift the trophy for the first time since 2020.

Liverpool are now eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table in the wake of Manchester City's 4-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday. As a result, title glory looks to be a case of when - rather than if.
