The Red Devils icon was taken unwell at the stadium

Sir Alex Ferguson was rushed to hospital from Old Trafford this afternoon after becoming unwell at the stadium ahead of Manchester United's Premier League clash with Liverpool.

The 84-year-old former United manager, who remains the most decorated boss in the club's history, had arrived at the ground for the highly anticipated fixture against the Reds.

Medical staff transported Ferguson to hospital more than 60 minutes prior to kick-off.

According to the Daily Mail, club sources have indicated the hospitalisation is purely precautionary, with officials expressing confidence that the legendary Scot will be recovering at home in the near future.

There is nothing to suggest this incident is connected to the brain haemorrhage Ferguson suffered in 2018.

Ferguson's journey to Old Trafford today comes eight years after he faced a life-threatening medical emergency that nearly claimed his life.

In May 2018, the Scot underwent emergency surgery following a sudden brain haemorrhage, with doctors giving him just a 20 per cent chance of survival.

The 13-time Premier League winner spoke candidly about his brush with death in his 2021 documentary 'Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In'.

"There were five brain haemorrhages that day," Ferguson recalled.

"Three died. Two survived. You know you are lucky."

His remarkable recovery from that ordeal demonstrated the same determination that defined his managerial career at United.

The years since Ferguson's health scare have brought further heartache for the Glaswegian.

In 2023, he endured the devastating loss of his wife Lady Cathy, who passed away aged 84 after 57 years of marriage.

Despite these personal tragedies, Ferguson has maintained his deep connection to United, remaining a familiar presence in the directors' box at home and away fixtures.

His commitment to the club has continued even after minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe removed his paid ambassadorial position in 2024 as part of sweeping cost reductions that saw hundreds of staff lose their jobs.

The decision ended a £2million annual arrangement, yet Ferguson has kept attending matches regularly.

Ratcliffe explained his reasoning for the decision in candid terms a year ago.

"I sat down with Alex, just the two of us in the room. And I said, 'Look, the club isn't where you may think it is. It is spending more than it's earning and we're going to finish up in some difficulties. Honestly, we can't really afford to continue to pay you £2m a year,'" the INEOS founder said.

Ratcliffe revealed he gave Ferguson time to consider the matter, describing the initial conversation as "very grown up" though "maybe a little bit grumpy at the beginning".

Ferguson consulted with his son before returning three days later to confirm he would voluntarily step back.

"I think it reflects really well on Alex because he put the club before himself," Ratcliffe added.
