The Red Devils have endured a nightmare season as the showdown at Anfield creeps closer

Roy Keane feels Ruben Amorim has risked upsetting his Manchester United players by admitting they're fighting to stay in the Premier League ahead of Sunday's clash with Liverpool - with the Irishman convinced those comments could spell trouble when it comes to a possible relegation battle.

The Red Devils have lost six of their last eight matches across all competitions and currently sit 14th in the league table.

They are just six points above the drop zone as a result and, with Liverpool flying, there are fears they could be subject to a drubbing during today's game at Anfield.

Speaking recently, United boss Amorim admitted that the club could soon find themselves battling relegation.

United have regressed since his appointment, having previously struggled for consistency under Erik ten Hag.

And Keane, speaking on Sky Sports, feels Amorim has risked worsening morale at Old Trafford with his comments - while also suggesting 'false hope' is needed to lift the mood.

"You want managers to be honest, of course," he said.

"You don't want them to be full of nonsense and PR. But sometimes, that message from the manager... if I was a player I'd be going, 'I'm not sure I'd like to hear that'.

"Sometimes you’ve got to fake it to make it and say there's belief in the dressing room, we’re ready, we’re up against it but I believe in these players.

"He obviously hasn’t got that trust yet but just give them a bit of false hope sometimes."

On the match with Liverpool itself, Keane continued: "If they keep doing what they've been doing, they're going to get ripped apart.

"I worry about the players who don't want to run. You've got to run in this game."

United have never challenged for the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

There's a sense they're going backwards, especially after spending millions on players who have been unable to produce.

It seemed unfeasible just over a decade ago that United would fall down the ladder of English football quite in the way they have.

And Keane believes the players are to blame, with the Irishman admitting there's 'concern' over the individuals at the club.

"There has been literally no reaction [to Amorim's appointment] from the players, which is a big concern," he fumed.

"They don’t look like a great group. They’ve got no world-class players.

"They haven’t got a striker that can get them out of jail. The goalkeeper is not great. The players have to be held accountable.

"I just want a bit of passion in their performance. It’s disgraceful what they’re doing week in, week out."
