Manchester City's key star suffered an injury against Arsenal

Manchester City have been dealt a severe blow as midfielder Rodri has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear in his right knee.

The injury occurred during Sunday's 2-2 Premier League draw with Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium.

Multiple sources, including ESPN and the Manchester Evening News, report that tests conducted on Monday morning confirmed the worst fears for the club.

The Spanish international is now expected to miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season, with surgery likely to take place in Barcelona.

This development comes as a significant setback for Pep Guardiola's side and their aspirations of securing a fifth consecutive Premier League title.

The incident occurred during the first half of the match against Arsenal. Rodri initially collided with Kai Havertz in the opening seconds, but managed to continue playing.

However, around the 15-minute mark, he went down after an innocuous challenge from Thomas Partey during a corner.

Unable to continue, Rodri was replaced by Mateo Kovacic.

After the match, Guardiola commented: "I don't know, I didn't speak to the doctor. [But] Rodri is strong.

"He leaves the pitch in this action because he felt something, otherwise Rodri stays there."

The City boss added: "He's the best holding midfielder in the world, he is a potential Ballon d'Or winner."

Rodri's absence is a massive blow for Manchester City. The 28-year-old Spaniard is widely regarded as one of the world's best holding midfielders.

Since joining City in 2019, Rodri has been instrumental in their success, winning 11 trophies including four consecutive Premier League titles.

His influence is evident in the team's performance statistics. City have won 74% of matches with Rodri in the lineup, compared to a significantly lower win rate when he's absent.

Guardiola has previously described Rodri as "a potential Ballon d'Or winner", highlighting his crucial role in the team's tactical setup and overall success.

Manchester City now face the challenge of filling the void left by Rodri's absence.

Mateo Kovacic, who replaced Rodri against Arsenal, seems the natural option to step in.

Other potential replacements within the squad include Rico Lewis, John Stones, Bernardo Silva, and Matheus Nunes.

The injury could also force City to enter the January transfer window. Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes is reportedly admired by the club's hierarchy.
