Reading's League One match against Port Vale on Saturday was abandoned following a pitch invasion from the home supporters.

A statement from the Royals confirmed the club could face 'serious sanctions' due to the incident.

Fans ran onto the pitch in the 16th minute of the match at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

Reading urged supporters to return to their seats with several statements on social media.

However, their pleas were ignored and the officials had no choice but to abandon the game at around 4.25pm.

Reading supporters have protested against Dai Yongge's ownership on multiple occasions.

A fan group called Sell Before We Dai had planned a protest at the end of the match.

Tennis balls have often been thrown onto the pitch at previous games to halt proceedings and they were again in the third minute on Saturday before play briefly resumed.

In December, fans protested at the Houses of Parliament against Yongge.

The EFL imposed sanctions on the Chinese businessman, including a transfer embargo caused by an unpaid tax bill.

Reading were relegated from the Championship after 10 years last season after being deducted six points in April for financial irregularities.

Reading released a statement on their X account shortly after the match was first interrupted.

The post read: "We are fully aware of and understand our supporters’ frustrations but we must reiterate to our supporters that entering or throwing items onto the pitch can put the fixture at risk of abandonment and can result in personal consequences including banning orders.

"Thank you for your support today."

However, it fell on deaf ears and they continued to release more statements.

The next one admitted that the Berkshire club could face 'serious' repercussions if the game did not restart.

It read: "We appreciate supporters' frustrations. Please leave the field of play.

"The club will face serious sanctions if this does not take place."

A last-ditch effort was made in the hope the game could continue.

"This is the last chance to get the game restarted.

"The club can face serious sanctions if the pitch is not cleared."

However, the authorities were unable to remove the hundreds of fans from the playing area.

The game was 0-0 at the time, with Reading remaining in the relegation zone in the third tier.
