Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has challenged Marcus Rashford to "want it" if he hopes to revive his faltering career at Old Trafford.

The forward, who netted 30 goals in the 2022-23 season, has managed just five goals in 19 appearances during the current campaign.

Despite scoring in Amorim's first match in charge during Sunday's 1-1 draw against Ipswich, Rashford has struggled to recapture his previous form.

"He has to be Marcus, first of all, to try to return to that moment, and then he will have all the help of the staff, the club and the fans because he's a Manchester United boy," Amorim said.

"But he has to be the first one to want it."

Amorim acknowledged that Rashford's central striking role against Ipswich was not ideal for the player's abilities.

"That position is not the best one for him, especially in a game like that," Amorim explained.

"We had to kick with high pressure, we had to kick the ball so many times and it was like he was fighting with two giants."

The United manager confirmed he will look to find a more suitable position for Rashford, who has previously expressed a preference for playing on the left wing.

"We will try to find the right solution for him, as for the other players," said Amorim, indicating a willingness to adapt his tactical approach to get the best from the England international.

Manchester United's goalscoring woes extend beyond Rashford's individual struggles, with the team managing just 13 league goals this season.

Summer signings Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, who cost a combined £108m, have scored only three goals between them in all competitions.

"Of course there is a concern in that, but I think we have to improve as a team," Amorim said.

"We have quality players who can score so many goals."

The manager highlighted several players who need to contribute more in front of goal.

"We will try to improve as a team and Rasmus and Joshua and Rash will score more goals - even Bruno [Fernandes] has to score more goals," he stated.

"Amad has to be better near the goal."

Amorim has dismissed suggestions that United need to enter the transfer market for a new striker to solve their scoring issues.

"We need to improve as a team and these players can score goals," the United manager insisted.

His focus remains on maximising the potential of his current squad, particularly in their attacking play.

The manager noted that while United controlled possession against Ipswich, they lacked cutting edge in the final third.

"You could feel it in the second-half - we controlled possession of the ball but we were not dangerous," Amorim said.

"Maybe it was because we spent the week trying to work on build up and then the rest was not working."
