The outgoing manager wanted to correct what a former Liverpool player said

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp called out former Reds left-back Jose Enrique during his press conference on Friday.

The outgoing manager wanted to correct Enrique after he had claimed that the club's owners played a part in his decision to leave.

Klopp will step down as Liverpool manager at the end of the season following a lengthy spell in charge at Anfield.

Fenway Sports Group have often received criticism for not backing the German in the transfer market when he needed it the most.

Enrique, who played his final season at Liverpool under Klopp, gave his reaction to the news on Friday.

The Spaniard paid tribute to the 56-year-old but told Sky Sports that he thinks the decision was 'to do with the spending and the owners'.

Enrique said: "My initial thoughts were actually I was mad but you cannot blame him. He’s a legend, I believe Liverpool will build a statue. Because of him, Liverpool have achieved everything they have in the last few years.

"I think something happened. I have my own opinion about it. I think it has to do with the spending and the owners.

"I think he has got tired of it to keep fighting every single year to sign the players that he deserves in the team.

"I think he’s just got tired of that. That’s a personal opinion. Obviously he’s giving his opinion and that’s a real one but from my side and seeing it from a former player as well, he’s just every year he needs to do miracles to win stuff with these players.

"Obviously they have a great team this year to win stuff but again, this January transfer window, the team needs something and the owners just don’t give it. I really believe they need one or two players and he does as well, even if he doesn’t say so.

"So I think he’s just tired of it. I think he believes it’s going to be a good season and then after that, he leaves as a king.

"That’s my opinion from the outside, I’m not sure if anyone is thinking like me but it’s very sad and first thoughts, I was mad. Not about him but the owners. I was really, really mad about it."

Klopp had seen Enrique's interview before he held his press conference on Friday afternoon.

And he wanted to make it clear that Enrique was wrong and FSG played no part in him calling it a day.

Klopp said: "I saw only this morning, surprisingly, when it came out, I saw Jose Enrique, who I like a lot and obviously has a big Liverpool heart, said whatever I say that it's still about FSG.

"I can tell you, Jose, it's not. Nothing to do with it."

Klopp admitted he has not always been 100 per cent happy with the club's hierarchy.

However, he says it is wrong to blame them for times when the team fell short in their quest of winning more silverware.

Klopp added: "It would be easy in this job to blame the owners and say 'yeah we would have won more trophies if FSG would have spent spent more'.

"Was I always happy with each second of what we did exactly? No, but it was absolutely fine.

"This club is different because we built two stands, which will last forever. If there is not an earthquake, they will stay there.

"This AXA Centre will stay for the next 40/50 years, wonderful, everything set. We did everything properly, the Liverpool way.

"That we got 97 points and 94 points and didn't win the league or didn't win more Champions League it wasn't down to not signing one player. If you want to blame anyone for not winning the Champions League, blame me."
