The Chelsea loanee still looks set to join the Blues on a permanent basis

Chelsea have the option to pay Manchester United £5 million to avoid making Jadon Sancho's loan move permanent this summer, despite having an obligation-to-buy agreement.

The 24-year-old winger joined the Blues last summer in a deal that included a clause to purchase him for up to £25 million.

This represents a significant loss for United, who originally paid £73 million to sign Sancho from Borussia Dortmund in 2021.

The obligation-to-buy fee varies depending on Chelsea's final league position.

Sancho initially impressed at Stamford Bridge, registering eight goal contributions in his first 11 appearances under Enzo Maresca.

However, his form has dipped in recent months, with his last goal coming in December.

Across 23 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea, Sancho has managed just two goals and six assists.

The former England international had moved to London hoping to revitalise his career after falling out of favour under Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Chelsea are currently contributing to his wages while United continue to pay a portion.

Despite Sancho's recent struggles, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca spoke highly of him in January.

"He is doing very well for me," Maresca told reporters. "I am quite surprised with Jadon. I knew Jadon already so knew what to expect from him but in terms of being consistent."

"I expected him to do well but for all players to do well for a long period is not easy. He has done well for a long period," the Italian added.

Bundesliga clubs are closely monitoring Sancho's situation ahead of a potential summer move.

GiveMeSport report that Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen are interested in the winger's services.

A return to Germany could be appealing for Sancho, who produced his best career form at Dortmund before his move to Old Trafford.

Reports suggest England may no longer be an option for the Manchester City academy graduate.

The Bundesliga duo are reportedly preparing for an "opportunistic" offer in the summer transfer window.

Despite having the £5 million opt-out clause, Chelsea are still expected to sign Sancho permanently this summer, according to Sky Sports.

However, there remains a possibility that the Blues could sell him on immediately after completing the transfer.

This strategy aligns with reports that Chelsea intend to enter the market for a new winger during the upcoming transfer window.

The club's decision will likely depend on Sancho's performances in the remaining fixtures as they push to secure Champions League football for next season.
