George Baldock's death has caused shockwaves around the world of football.

Harry Maguire has been left heartbroken by George Baldock's death at the age of 31.

The former Sheffield United star was found dead in the swimming pool of his house in Greece on Wednesday evening.


Police revealed they tried cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the British-born Greece international, but they were unable to revive him.

Baldock joined Panathinaikos earlier this year after his seven-year spell with Sheffield United came to an end.

His family confirmed Baldock's death in a heartbreaking statement.

"We can confirm that George has sadly passed away," they said.

"As a family we are in shock at this terrible loss."

Maguire, who began his career playing for Sheffield United, led tributes to Baldock online.

The centre-back posted a photo of Baldock in his Sheffield United days along with the caption "RIP" and a broken heart emoji on his Instagram story.

Baldock played for Panathinaikos on Sunday in their 0-0 draw with rivals Olympiacos.

The match was only his second start for the Greek side after his summer move.

"We are shocked, we are shocked by the loss of our George," Panathinaikos said in a statement.

"The family of Panathinaikos mourns his untimely death. We stand with the family and loved ones of George Baldock."

Baldock played a key role for the Sheffield United side, which gained promotion to the Premier League in 2023.

He left the team after they were relegated a year later and the Championship side paid tribute to their former player."

The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him," their statement read.

"The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George’s family and friends."

Baldock was capped 12 times by Greece and last paid for the country in March this year when they lost to Georgia in their Euro 2024 qualifying play-off.

The Greek national team said in a statement: "With profound sadness and sorrow, the national team and the Greek Football Federation bid farewell to George Baldock.

"There are no words to describe the human pain caused by the news of the unexpected loss of one of our own, young, man.

"The moment forces silence. Condolences to his family. Condolences from his second family."
