Harry Kane has ripped into his Bayern Munich team-mates after their woeful 3-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday night.

The reigning Bundesliga champions saw their hopes of retaining the title dented as Xabi Alonso's side ran riot.

Goals from Josip Stanisic, Alex Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong mean Leverkusen are now five points clear of Bayern at the top of the table.

And Kane, speaking to Sky Sports after the game, didn't hold back with a brutal assessment of the way his team performed.

"We didn’t play well with the ball," he said. "I thought the pressure, especially in the first half and even in the second half, we pressed them well, but every time we won it back we gave it straight back to them.

"That allowed them to build momentum.

"In the final third we weren’t good in one-vs-one battles, we weren’t good in duels, the final delivery wasn’t there today, so a really disappointing day with the ball.

"We’re five points behind now but there are still a lot of games to go.

"This one hurts, we wanted a different outcome, but we have to focus on, first, the Champions League, and obviously the next game.

"There are a lot of games to be played and we have to try and make up as many points as we can, as quickly as we can."

When asked if Bayern were now underdogs for the title race, despite their impressive record of winning the trophy for the past 11 years, he continued: "That’s not for us to decide. That’s for everyone else to decide.

"For us, we have to focus on ourselves, we have to improve, we have to get better.

"We know that. The games are coming thick and fast so we have to turn it around quick."

Kane wasn't the only Bayern player to vent their fury.

Thomas Muller also spoke out and revealed he was 'p***ed off' following the nightmare result against Xabi Alonso's side.

He said: "There are of course some symptoms on the pitch. To be honest, I'm p***ed off.

"To quote Oliver Kahn: 'What I miss from us players are the balls in the game'.

"We are showing significantly better approaches in training. It's okay to feel pressure, but there needs to be energy and freedom. That's missing in our game."

Leverkusen boss Alonso, meanwhile, praised his side as they took yet another step towards a maiden Bundesliga title.

“Without the ball, we have been able to control the spaces, not to concede many chances, and wait for our chances," he said.

“We have controlled well to find the right moment when to press, when to wait, who could have the ball, who could not have the ball.

“The determination and conviction of the players is what comes to my mind first, I need to say thank you to them to push them and to help them keep going.”

Alonso is currently being linked with the Liverpool job after Jurgen Klopp confirmed he'd be leaving the club at the end of the season.

There is, however, currently no clear indication if the 42-year-old will swap Germany for England come the end of the season.
