George Baldock's family have released a statement after the former Sheffield United star died while in Greece.

His death was confirmed by the Greek Super League late on Wednesday night, with the footballing world in mourning, with reports saying that he was found at his home.


Baldock's family have now released a statement also confirming the heartbreaking news.

"We can confirm that George has sadly passed away," it read. "As a family we are in shock at this terrible loss.

"We ask please that the media respect our privacy at this time."

Baldock's sudden death comes just days after he featured for Panathinaikos in their clash with Olympiacos on October 6.

They have paid tribute to their defender, saying: “We are shocked, we are shocked by the loss of our George.

"The family of Panathinaikos mourns his untimely death. We stand with the family and loved ones of George Baldock.”

Baldock became a hero during his time at Sheffield United, making 219 appearances and scoring six goals.

The Blades have also reacted to his sudden passing, saying: "Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock.

"The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him.

"The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George’s family and friends."

Other teams have also paid tribute to Baldock.

Manchester City said: "The thoughts of everyone at Manchester City are with George's family and friends at this sad time."

Everton reacted to Sheffield United's statement by saying: "The thoughts of everyone at Everton are with George’s family and friends at this incredibly sad and difficult time."

Sunderland said: "Our thoughts are with George’s friends, family, loved ones and all those at Sheffield United at this incredibly sad time. Rest in peace, George."

Liverpool wrote: "Such awful news. The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with George’s family and friends."

And West Brom, Chelsea, Ipswich, Stoke and numerous other clubs have also wrote similar messages of condolence.

Baldock initially started his career at MK Dons, making 125 appearances for the club.

After loan spells with the likes of Northampton Town, Tamworth, IBV and Oxford United he joined Sheffield United in 2017.

Baldock played a part as the Blades earned promotion to the Premier League in 2019, with the defender making 27 appearances that season, while he also starred as they returned to the Premier League in 2023.

He played four times for Panathinaikos and was capped 12 times by Greece, too.
