Manchester United were far from their best in the first half against Tottenham on Sunday.

Gary Neville has ripped into Manchester United for their first-half display against Tottenham which saw Bruno Fernandes shown a straight red for a high challenge on James Maddison.

Tottenham and United have endured slow starts to the league campaign with both starting the match in 10th and 11th respectively.

Spurs have managed to find some form since losing the north London derby to Arsenal earlier this month with three wins on the bounce.

But United headed into the match in need of a boost after back-to-back disappointing draws against Crystal Palace and FC Twente.

It set up a fascinating tie at Old Trafford with three points for either side potentially changing their fortunes. However,

Tottenham were the only team to show any attacking impetus throughout the first half with United looking abject at best.

Their defensive unit was all over the place when Micky van de Ven ran 75 yards through their entire team before setting up Brennan Johnson for the opening goal of the game.

That failed to spark United into life with Tottenham the more likely to score the game's second goal.

Frustrations from the home crowd boiled over onto the pitch towards the end of the half when Fernandes was shown a straight red card for a high challenge on James Maddison.

Neville felt the Portuguese midfielder only had himself to blame for making the lunge, but felt it summed up a horrid display from his former team.

"The fact of the matter is he slips and I think he just reacts and tries to trip him," Neville said.

"But it looks bad because he's gone in just under knee-high.
