Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman has complained about the penalty given to England in their hard-fought 2-1 victory on Wednesday night.

The Three Lions reached the final of Euro 2024 after producing their best performance of the competition so far in Dortmund.

Xavi Simons put the Netherlands ahead in the seventh minute of the match, with the Paris Saint-Germain star's stunning strike too hot for Jordan Pickford to handle.

But goals from Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins sent England through, with Gareth Southgate's team due to lock horns with Spain in the final on Sunday.

Kane scored a penalty in the 18th minute. Nothing was initially given after he was tackled by Denzel Dumfries inside the box, only for VAR to then intervene.

And Koeman, speaking at his post-match press conference, has now complained about the decision to give the spot-kick.

"This is not a penalty," said the former Everton, Southampton and Barcelona boss. "His only intention was to block a shot. Harry Kane then shoots and their feet collide.

"Football is getting destroyed by these type of decisions by VAR. This penalty would not have been given in England.

"What should you do as a defender? I thought the referee whistled for a lot of silly things, but that's not why we lose."

Koeman wasn't the only Dutch figure frustrated by the decision.

Netherlands skipper Virgil van Dijk also blasted the call and said that he wouldn't be commenting on the matter.

"I think the penalty moment is a big moment, England had some confidence out of it," he said.

"Second half we could have scored to make it 2-1. To concede in extra time is tough.

"I think so many decisions didn't go our way but I don't want to speak about the referee today.

"Supporters in general are very important, they need to back us and be with us regardless.

"We've seen them in high numbers and hopefully they continue to do so.

"I don't think I should comment on that [penalty decision]. I'm very disappointed that we didn't achieve our dreams tonight.

"I need a good break because this season has been very tough for many different reasons and that's life sometimes but it's tough."

Koeman, meanwhile, admitted that England were the better team in the first half.

And he also expressed a belief his side had done enough to force extra time, too.

"First half, yes. Second half, not," he said when asked if England were the superior side on the night.

"In the second half, it was more 50/50, there were problems in our midfield in the first half.

"We didn't control how they played between the lines with Bellingham and Foden, that was really difficult.

"We had to change to put one more in midfield. Then it was a 50/50 match.

"My feeling was in the last 20/25 minutes, maybe our team is a little bit more fresh than England.

"But they scored a late goal in the last minute and that's football.

"Sometimes I don't say it's unlucky because it's a great goal.

"Maybe we deserved extra time, but it's like that. We can be proud about our team, our players because we had a great tournament and unlucky that it stops tonight."
