Harry Kane scored from 12 yards to draw the Three Lions level on Wednesday night

Gary Neville believes it is an 'absolute disgrace' that England were given a penalty in their Euro 2024 clash with the Netherlands on Wednesday night.

Harry Kane was able to score from 12 yards after being fouled by Denzel Dumfries inside the box.

The Bayern Munich star blasted his effort into the bottom corner, getting the better of Bart Verbruggen - who dived the right way.

Initially, no penalty was given. However, after a VAR check, Kane was able to cancel out Xavi Simons' thunderbolt opener and draw England level.

It seemed harsh on Dumfries, who appeared frustrated by the decision.

And Neville has now criticised the call, with the former Manchester United star believing referee Felis Zwayer got it wrong.

"As a defender, I think it's an absolutely disgraceful decision," he said.

"There's no way that was a penalty. He just goes in naturally to block the shot.

"It's not a penalty for me. You have to take your luck though."

Alan Shearer, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, also criticised the decision.

He believes there was contact with Kane - but feels for Dumfries at the same time.

"There is no doubt that there is contact, but the defender [Denzel Dumfries] is trying to block the ball," he said.

"The follow through from Harry Kane makes the connection and I didn't think it was a howler to be turned over."

England are unlikely to care, however. They're now level with the Netherlands and have started the fixture the stronger of the two teams, despite surviving an early scare.

Matthew Upson, who previously played for England during his playing days, has been impressed by their performance.

"Extremely happy, a top performance," he said. "Players that have turned up, Phil Foden and Harry Kane.

"Marc Guehi has been exceptional, but you want to talk about players at the other side of the pitch who have been excellent.

"Kobbie Mainoo, wow what a 45-minutes he has had."

Should England beat the Netherlands, they'll face Spain in the final of the tournament on Sunday.
