Alerts were sent to residents' phones about the weather warning

The England camp had to shelter indoors after a "deadly" tornado warning was issued in Kansas City.

Thomas Tuchel's side held a training session at their Swope Soccer Village base in blazing sunshine before the weather took a turn.

Heavy storms hit the area, with an emergency alert being sent to phones alerting thousands of people, including the England camp, to take shelter.

The players opted to stay inside their Inn at Meadowbrook hotel in Prairie Village.

The alerts on the phone read: "Critical. Imminent Threat Alert.

"National Weather Service: Severe thunderstorm warning in effect for this area until 9:00PM CDT for destructive 80mph winds.

"Take shelter in a sturdy building, away from windows. Flying debris may be deadly to those caught without shelter.

"For your protection, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building."

Local television stations stopped their coverage of Scotland's World Cup contest against Haiti and the NBA Finals to track the storm.

Fans at the Kansas City Royals contest against the Houston Astros were told to seek shelter during the baseball fixture.

England has had to deal with their fair share of storms, including their final warm-up friendly against Costa Rica being delayed by a thunderstorm.

Plenty of hiccups have hit the England camp, including the team chef being barred from a Florida train service.

The culinary specialist, who plays a vital role in keeping the squad properly fuelled, accidentally triggered a metal detector at West Palm Beach station while attempting to catch a Brightline service to Orlando before the Costa Rica friendly.

It turns out he was carrying his cooking knives, which fell foul of the rail operator's strict no-weapons policy – even though Florida state law permits concealed pocket knives.

The chef had to make alternative travel arrangements, though sources say the matter was sorted without any fuss.

This was not the first setback for the Three Lions.

Earlier, news broke of a rather audacious theft targeting the England camp.

Sources later confirmed the items taken from vehicles transporting equipment to their Swope Soccer Village base were recovered and returned.

Two arrests were made in connection with the incident.
