Elon Musk's next venture could be in football ownership as he eyes a bid for Liverpool

Elon Musk's interest in buying Liverpool Football Club has been seemingly confirmed by his father Errol.

When asked if his son wanted to buy the Premier League club, Errol Musk responded: "I can't comment on that, they'll raise the price."

He then added: "Oh yes, [he has expressed a desire], but that doesn't mean he's buying it."

The elder Musk further elaborated on his son's potential interest, telling Times Radio: "He would like to yes, obviously. Anybody would want to – so would I."

He emphasised the family's connection to the city, saying: "His grandmother was born in Liverpool, and we have relatives in Liverpool, and we were fortunate to know quite a few of the Beatles because they grew up with some of my family."

"So, we are attached to Liverpool you know," he concluded.

The Musk family's connection to Liverpool runs deep through Elon's paternal grandmother, Cora Robinson.

Born in Mossley Hill in August 1923, Robinson later left England to settle in South Africa, where she married Walter Musk in 1944.

Elon Musk spent time in Liverpool during his childhood, according to his father's previous interviews with the Mirror.

During one memorable visit, a young six-year-old Musk sparked a police search after wandering off from a playground in Wirral.

He was eventually found safe and sound, ten miles away from where he had last been seen.

The tech entrepreneur's childhood visits included activities like picking strawberries in local fruit fields and trips to Wimbledon.

Any potential Liverpool takeover would require significant investment, with Forbes currently valuing the club at £4.2bn.

However, this figure would be well within reach for Musk, who is currently the world's richest person with an estimated net worth of £339.3bn, according to Forbes.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO's wealth dwarfs the £4.25bn paid by Todd Boehly's consortium for Chelsea in 2022.

Liverpool's current valuation suggests FSG would likely seek a figure exceeding the Chelsea sale price.

Musk's vast fortune stems from his various business ventures, including his roles as CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, as well as his ownership of social media platform X.

Liverpool's current owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have previously played down the possibility of selling the club outright.

Principal owner John W. Henry addressed takeover speculation in 2023, telling the Boston Sports Journal: "Are we selling LFC? No."

He did, however, acknowledge ongoing discussions with potential investors.

"Are talking with investors about LFC? Yes. Will something happen there? I believe so, but it won't be a sale," Henry stated.

The club currently sits at the top of both the Premier League and their Champions League group under FSG's ownership.

Any potential move by Musk would need to overcome FSG's apparent reluctance to relinquish full control of the club.
