The French left-back is set for a windfall

Benjamin Mendy has won part of his battle against former club Manchester City over £11.5million in unpaid wages.

The 30-year-old took the reigning Premier League champions to an employment tribunal when his £500,000-a-month salary was halted in 2021.

Mendy was cleared of rape and attempted rape charges last year following two trials.

The defender joined French Ligue 2 club Lorient after his contract at the Etihad Stadium expired.

Mendy claimed for 'unauthorised deductions' from his wages, having been left unhappy with City's decision to halt his salary.

And he's now won the fight for the majority of his unpaid salary from when he was facing rape charges.

His deal at the time showed that, on top of his salary, he would pocket a £900,000 bonus for appearing in 60 per cent of matches.

He would then be given a staggering £1million bonus if City qualified for the Champions League, and an annual £1.2m payment to his image rights company.

However, a month after being charged, City informed the left-back that they would be stopping his wages.

This was because he was 'not presently ready and able to perform the obligations of his contract'.

Mendy claimed he was assured by former Man City chief Omar Berrada, who now works for Manchester United, that he'd receive his unpaid wages after being cleared.

Yet the Frenchman told the tribunal that, when he messaged Berrada asking for confirmation in November 2022, he was given no response.

Mendy also claimed that he received no message back from Man City chief Khaldoon Al Mubarak when he asked about his unpaid wages.

The Lorient star told the tribunal that he was forced to borrow money from his team-mates, claiming he ran out of it 'very quickly'.

Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez were among those to help him out, the court was told.

Mendy was also forced to sell his home in Cheshire to cover legal fees, child support payments and bills.

Sean Jones KC, representing City, said Mendy had only himself to blame. However, the defender has now won the majority of the battle against his old side.

Mendy joined City from Monaco back in the summer transfer window of 2017, having helped the Ligue 1 giants win the title the following year.

He became a key player under Pep Guardiola at first and helped the club win three Premier League titles.

Mendy has also made 10 appearances for France, with his last cap coming back in 2019.
