The Brit won the US Open back in September 2021

Emma Raducanu has gone woke by backing a reimagining of a classic fairy tale.

Appearing in a video for HSBC, while reading from 'Fairer Tales', the 2021 US Open champion urged young girls to make money for themselves - rather than relying on men.

The book, which was published by Emma Dodds back in 2018, includes alternative takes on classic stories such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel.

It essentially writes out Prince Charming from the narratives, with the female characters making their own businesses or investing instead of marrying the prince and relying on him to provide financial support.

One story includes Cinderella making a fortune by inventing her own sports shoe.

Rapunzel becomes a property mogul after cutting her hair and using it as a rope to escape the tower, which she then proceeds to renovate and rent out.

With regards to the character of Sleeping Beauty, she profits from a hundred years' interest on her pocket money.

She also tells Prince Charming, who wakes her up by ringing her doorbell: “I don’t need a kiss because all your noisy ringing has already woken me up.

"And I’m certainly not going to marry you, we’ve only just met!”

Raducanu says in the video: “Rapunzel is now a free woman, who earns lots of money and is able to live well.

"She even has some spare money, which she can use to buy a share in Cinderella’s new and exciting sports shoe business.

“Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel are all successful young women.

"They have used their brains, imagination and good sense to earn enough money to look after themselves without a Prince Charming in sight.”

The video is part of HSBC's financial education programme.

It is aimed at children between three and seven to help them 'learn how earning and managing their money wisely can lead to exciting adventures and achieving their goals'.

HSBC are one of Raducanu's sponsors, too.

The Brit is believed to take home around £12.2million annually, despite injuries restricting her participation in tennis in recent times.

Raducanu has only won five matches in an injury-plagued year.

And she's been out of action for over four months due to wrist and ankle problems that required surgery - though has stepped up her recovery in recent weeks.

Raducanu recently opened up on her injury issues, which have also seen the 20-year-old fall to 214 in the world.

And she revealed she played through the pain because she was worried about being 'perceived as weak'.

"The pain [in the wrists] escalated last summer after Wimbledon," she stated.

"I started with a new coach and I was really motivated to get going.

"We were over-training, a lot of repetition, and I carried on even through pain because I didn’t want to be perceived as weak.

"I was struggling with the physical pain but the mental side of it was really difficult for me too.

"I always want to put forward the best version of myself, or strive for that, but I knew I couldn’t.

"I was under so much pressure to perform, people had no idea what was going on and I had to have this facade, to keep everything inside.

"It has been really hard. And then to be scrutinised for it when they don’t know what is going on.

"I am very young and still learning and making mistakes. It is a lot harder when you are making mistakes in front of everyone and everyone has something to say about it. The tour is completely brutal."
