The winger will move to Stamford Bridge on a seven-year contract

Cole Palmer has opened up on his decision to leave Manchester City for Chelsea.

The youngster, who has impressed for Pep Guardiola's side so far this season, moves to Stamford Bridge on a seven-year contract.

Palmer will also cost Chelsea a huge £42.5million, despite making less than 50 senior appearances for City.

And the forward has now explained why he's leaving the Etihad Stadium in order to play in west London while speaking to club media.

"I’m excited to get started and it feels great to sign," said the England Under-21 star.

"I’ve joined Chelsea because the project here sounds good and because of the platform I will have to try to showcase my talents.

"It is a young and hungry squad and, hopefully, we can do something special here."

Co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley added: "Cole arrives with experience of winning the Premier League and Champions League and adds further quality and versatility to our attacking unit.

"He has showcased his talent and potential in the most challenging environments and delivered on the international stage for England this summer at the European Under-21 Championships.

"He is undoubtedly ready for this next step and we are delighted it will be with Chelsea."

Palmer has become the 11th player to join Chelsea this summer.

Goalkeepers Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic touched down from Brighton and New England respectively.

Axel Disasi, Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia and Lesley Ugochukwu have been brought in to add more muscle and steel to ther side.

And Chelsea have also strengthened their attack by landing the likes of Nicolas Jacksen, Deivid Washington and Angelo - with the latter duo arriving from Santos.

Meanwhile, former Arsenal star Paul Merson was recently asked about Palmer.

And while he hailed the 21-year-old, he also admitted he was surprised by the youngster's decision to join Chelsea.

“I think he’s a good player," he said.

"I thought after the Community Shield he’d get a little bit more time at Man City.

“A bit shocked if I’m being honest. Good signing, good player. He’s got a bit of guile about him.

“Not so much as a dribble but he can find that pass and score a goal… It just shows at the moment Man City don’t think Chelsea are that much of a threat to them.”

Mauricio Pochettino was vague when asked about Palmer earlier in the week following his side's Carabao Cup victory over MK Dons.

"I don't know anything at the moment," he said. "I cannot talk about players that don't belong to us.

"What I can say is nothing at the moment. The club didn't tell me. I don't want to talk about a player that has still not signed.
