The Gypsy King will be returning to the ring in May

Tyson Fury is 'horrendous' when it comes to dealing with counterpunches, according to Tony Bellew.

The Gypsy King is currently training ahead of his blockbuster bout with Oleksandr Usyk, with the pair set to meet in Saudi Arabia on May 18.

Fury goes into that battle with a point to prove, having struggled against Francis Ngannou back in October.

Some believe the 35-year-old is a shadow of his former self, with his prime years behind him, though Fury has rubbished suggestions he's a man on the decline.

Bellew previously fought Usyk in 2018 and the Ukrainian is yet to lose a professional fight so far.

And Bellew has claimed Fury is 'horrendous' when it comes to counterpunches, insisting that could be his weakness in two months' time.

“On the technical side of things, Tyson Fury has always struggled with smaller movers and is horrendous when it comes to counterpunchers," he told Spinbet.

"If you go on the backfoot against Fury, he is lost.

“A complete boxing novice in Francis Ngannou when on the backfoot against Fury and caused him all kinds of problems.

"And I mean a raw, complete novice in Francis Ngannou.

“He gave him fits which is crazy to think a man with a boxing record of 0-0 went in there and pushed the heavyweight champion of the world to the absolute limit.

"Some people even think he won. You can’t really dispute that.”

Since Fury beat Ngannou back in October, Anthony Joshua has also beaten the former MMA man.

Joshua needed just two rounds to get the job done, with Fury watching the action in Saudi Arabia.

Eddie Hearn reacted to that win by saying AJ was the best heavyweight on the planet at the current moment in time.

He said: "I'm so proud of him because there was a huge amount of pressure.

"If we won this fight then he would fight the winner of Fury v Usyk.

"You're looking at the number one heavyweight in the world."

Yet Fury hit back at those comments and joked Usyk would 'have something to say' about Hearn's verdict.

"I'm sure that Oleksandr Usyk will have something to say about that given he beat him twice," he remarked.

The Gypsy King did, however, praise Joshua for his victory.

"For the actual real boxing, it’s me and Usyk who fight for the undisputed heavyweight world championship of the world," he added.

"I had a s**t performance against Ngannou and I almost got it right, I predicted one round.

“He did absolutely fantastic tonight, he lit him up with a right hand and knocked him out.

"That’s what a boxer should have done with him, but if he fights next year it’ll be a different game."
