Sarah Ferguson has revealed she went to "dark places" after being diagnosed with two different forms of cancer within months of each other.

The Duchess of York, 65, told The Times: "It was hard. I'm generally a positive person but cancer is like a bomb going off in your life."

She said: "One diagnosis is enough to deal with, but I had two in the space of a year. I don't mind admitting that my mind went to some dark places, reflecting on my own mortality,."

The former wife of Prince Andrew described the experience as particularly challenging, despite her typically positive outlook.

Ferguson was first diagnosed with breast cancer in summer 2023, undergoing a single mastectomy and breast reconstruction surgery.

Just six months later, in January 2024, she received news of a malignant melanoma diagnosis after tests on a removed mole.

The duchess has shown resilience through her treatment, even joking about naming her reconstructed breast "Derek".

She told The Times that meditation and mindfulness have helped her maintain positivity and balance during this difficult period.

She said: "My family have been an immense support to me through this period."

The duchess spoke candidly about her ongoing concerns for her daughters, Princess Beatrice, 36, and Princess Eugenie, 34.

She said: "You worry about them all the time. I still do now, when they're adults."

Fergie expressed particular concern about modern challenges facing young people: "I think young people today have it harder than ever. Social media is a cesspit and it's very frightening what young people are exposed to."

The duchess said she is looking forward to welcoming her fourth grandchild, as Princess Beatrice is expecting her second baby.

Despite their divorce in 1996, Sarah continues to live with Prince Andrew at the Royal Lodge on the Windsor Estate, which has fuelled a royal feud between the King and his brother.

The duchess has reportedly played a crucial role as an intermediary between Prince Andrew and King Charles.

The couple voluntarily withdrew from the royal Christmas party following Andrew's links to an alleged Chinese spy, a decision in which Ferguson is thought to have been influential.
