The King and Queen of Denmark tied the knot in 2004

Queen Mary and King Frederik celebrated the change of reign in Denmark over the weekend at Aarhus Cathedral.

The former monarch, Queen Margrethe II, surprised royal fans by announcing on New Year's Eve that she would abdicate.

She became the second Danish monarch in history (and first Queen) to voluntarily give up the throne.

King Frederik X ascended to the throne on January 14, and delivered a short speech from the balcony of Christiansborg Palace, following Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen proclaiming him as King.

The next day, the Danish royals attended the Danish Parliament's celebration of the succession of the throne.

On Sunday, the entire Danish Royal Family participated in a celebratory church service at Aarhus Cathedral to mark the start of King Fredrik's reign.

Queen Mary looked beautiful in purple as she waved to the crowds upon her arrival.

She donned the same Soeren le Schmidt Coat Dress that she wore to King Charles's Coronation last year.

Mary paired the coat dress with Jimmy Choo heels and a Jane Taylor London pillbox hat.

The hour-long service was to commemorate Frederik’s first official visit as King outside Copenhagen.

Mary and Frederik's children, Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, all attended.

The former monarch, Queen Margrethe, was also in attendance, wearing purple.

Her sister, Princess Benedikte, donned the same colour as she arrived at the cathedral for the ceremony.

Henrik Wigh-Poulsen, bishop of the Diocese of Aarhus, told The Associated Press: "Normally, you would spend three months planning this, but we (had) two and a half weeks, something like that.

"So we have been very busy, I tell you. I chose some of the hymns we’re going to sing, and the King said, I would like to sing these hymns.”
