The Crown Princess of Denmark will become the Queen on Sunday

Princess Mary will wear "less lavish jewellery" compared to the British royals during Sunday's accession of King Frederik X, a jewellery expert with historic links to the Danish Royal Family exclusively told GB News.

After Queen Margrethe II announced her surprise abdication during her New Year's Eve speech, the Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark have been preparing for their new roles as King and Queen.

Tobias Kormind is the Danish-born managing director of Europe’s largest online diamond jeweller, 77 Diamonds, headquartered in Mayfair, whose grandfather was a Royal Guard to Crown Prince Frederik's grandfather.

He spoke exclusively to GB News to discuss the jewellery that Crown Princess Mary will likely wear during Sunday's accession.

He said: "On Sunday, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary will become the new King and Queen of Denmark. Unlike the grand coronations in the UK, neither Crown Prince Frederik nor Crown Princess Mary will be crowned with the Danish Crown Jewels, but a proclamation of the new reign will be made by Denmark's Prime Minister during a smaller ceremony at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen.

"In fact, my grandfather Samuel Wassermann was a Royal Guard to Crown Prince Frederik's grandfather, who was known to be one of the people. He even had tattoos and would come home to the palace drunk on occasion and my grandfather would escort him into the castle.

"Similarly, Crown Prince Frederik, like his father and grandfather, is known to be very down to earth. So I anticipate the Crown Princess's choices to be less about the pomp and the ceremony of royalty for this to be expressed in less lavish jewellery, compared to other European royals."

However, the jewellery expert noted that Mary, who is originally from Australia, will inherit the "Danish Crown Jewels" now that she has become Queen.

Kormind continued: "That said, Crown Princess Mary will become the custodian of the Danish Crown Jewels, which belong to the state, and the family's own Danish Royal Property Trust, which includes several tiaras often worn by her mother-in-law for galas and other important events.

"Queen Margrethe II wore the Pearl Poiré Tiara soon after her own accession to the throne in 1972 in an official portrait. The tiara, which is made of diamonds set with eighteen pear-shaped (or “poiré”) pendant pearls, has become one of the Queen's most-worn pieces of jewellery.

"It's not unlikely that we will see Crown Princess Mary wearing the Pearl Poiré Tiara, if not during the ceremony, then in some upcoming galas or even in her first official portrait as Queen. The Danish Crown Jewels are some of the only crown jewels in the world that are both worn for gala events and displayed in museums.

"They cannot be taken outside of Denmark, meaning Crown Princess Mary is likely to opt for jewels from the Danish Royal Property trust for galas abroad. Crown Princess Mary might also wear the ruby parure which is currently her personal possession, rather than part of the jewellery trusts.

"The tiara is undoubtedly a special heirloom as the Crown Princess wore it to a government gala dinner before her wedding to Crown Prince Frederik.

"While the suite of ruby and diamond jewels is traditionally worn by Danish crown princesses, it's likely Mary may continue wearing the tiara.

"Queen Ingrid, Crown Prince Fredrik's grandmother, continued to wear the rubies after her husband’s accession and when she died in 2000, she left the ruby parure to her grandson for his future wife."
