The Duke and Duchess of Sussex gave up Royal Family duties in 2020

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle followed in the footsteps of Sarah, Duchess of York by using their royal titles to maintain fame and make money in America, according to a royal commentator.

Kinsey Schofield said the couple still use their royal titles to try and “maintain the perception of royalty,” but compared the Sussexes' status as similar to celebrities or reality stars.

She added that Harry and Meghan “insist that you refer to them as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in public” to maintain this image.

Schofield said: “Engaged royal watchers would likely categorise Harry and Meghan as celebrities or reality stars.

“But perception is reality and they are royal to the people that they are trying to impress.”

Schofield commented the couple were also “trying to visually maintain the royal aesthetic” by partaking in “faux royal engagements” like Prince Harry dropping the ceremonial puck at a Canucks-Sharks game.

The actions of Meghan and Harry mirror those of Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York when she went to America, according to The To Di For Daily host.

The host told the Daily Express US: "Sarah came to America to magnify her celebrity. To make money off her association with the royals.

"Sarah partnered with Oprah Winfrey several times, produced Hollywood films, wrote books, and even appeared as a product pusher on one of the home shopping networks."

Similarly, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex released books, appeared on an interview with Oprah and signed a lucrative Netflix deal since deciding to become “financially independent” from the Royal Family.

In 2021, Meghan was ridiculed for using her title, Duchess of Sussex, on the front cover of her children’s book, The Bench.

Royal commentator, Angela Levin said that using the royal title was “ridiculous” in the wake of Megxit and that “you can’t have everything you want like that.”

In October, American blogger and columnist Perez Hilton compared the couple to the reality TV stars the Kardashians.

Hilton told the couple that they are not considered “royal” in America and needed to “play the fame game” in order to make money.

He continued: “They are big celebrities here but that’s the thing that they are, they’re not royals to us and they need to cultivate their celebrity.

"They need to play the fame game because at the end of the day it's all about money."
