The Duke of Sussex is taking action against the Home Office

Prince Harry should “keep his mouth shut” to avoid putting his safety at risk, a security expert.

Dai Davies, who used to work as the former Head of Royal Protection at Scotland Yard, said the Duke of Sussex has “added to his own risk” with his actions in recent years.

Harry is taking action against the Home Office over the February 2020 decision of the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec) over his security.

The Duke was told he would no longer be given the “same degree” of personal protective security when visiting the UK.

Speaking on GB News, Davies said the decision was “reasonable” given Harry’s decision to step back from royal duties.

“He stepped out of this [royal duties] nearly four years ago and as a consequence, was no longer a working royal”, he said.

“What you have to take into account, irrespective of whether he is a working royal or not, what is the threat? What is the evidence?

“Clearly there are issues that affect him and unfortunately his own behaviour in the last three or four years frankly has added to his own risk.

“In one sense because he can’t keep his mouth shut. His version of the truth is often at variance with what everybody else thinks of truth.”

Harry was cleared to bring the challenge in July 2022 as he hit out at Ravec’s “procedural unfairness”.

Shaheed Fatima KC, for the Duke, told the High Court in London last year: “He didn’t know at that stage that the Royal Household was involved at all… he was told it was an independent decision.”

The hearing is one of the five High Court claims the Duke is involved in, with extensive litigation being brought against newspaper publishers.

Adding to his comments about Harry’s exploits in court, Davies said he is going about his aim for “privacy” in the “wrong way”.

Harry and his wife Meghan Markle stepped back from royal life in early January 2020.

Their statement at the time read: “We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth and our patronages.

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."
