The apology comes 27 years after the passing of the late Princess of Wales

Prince Harry has secured an apology for the late Princess Diana following his legal settlement with News Group Newspapers.

The publisher of The Sun offered a "full and unequivocal apology" for "serious intrusion into his private life as well as the private life of Diana, Princess of Wales, his late mother."

They added: "We acknowledge and apologise for the distress caused to the duke, and the damage inflicted on relationships, friendships and family, and have agreed to pay him substantial damages."

Prince Harry has claimed that the late Princess Diana "was probably one of the first" victims in the unlawful information gathering by the publisher of The Sun, claiming there was evidence she was hacked.

The apology comes 27 years after the passing of the late Princess of Wales, aged 36.

Diana, mother of Harry and William, died on August 31, 1997, following a car crash in Paris.

Before the settlement was agreed upon, Prince Harry was refused permission to push the timeline of the case back to 1994 and 1995 to include allegations involving his late mother as the judge said it was "too late".

The Sun publisher has also offered to pay the Duke of Sussex "substantial damages", with legal fee's estimated to be £10million for both sides in total, according to the BBC.

The Duke of Sussex was set to return to the UK for the trial next month despite it being scheduled to start at 10am on Tuesday.

However, on the day of the trial, it emerged that Harry's barrister was negotiating with the media group as they sought to delay the beginning of the trial.

The settlement was announced just over 24 hours after the case was scheduled to begin.

A source has told BBC News that NGN were "surprised by the serious approach by Prince Harry for settlement in recent days".
