Residents in the South American country say the Sussexes visit was 'very strange'

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's tour of Colombia has left locals confused with some unsure who the royal couple are.

Residents in the South American country say the Sussexes visit was "very strange", while others asked: "Who cares?"

The Duke and Duchess flew to Colombia as part of a four day tour which saw some locals turning out to see the royals but many others were left frustrated with the excess of armed police, sirens, blocked-off roads and traffic jams.

Some complained about not being able to catch a glimpse of the couple after they entered and exited venues unseen through underground car parks or hidden side streets.

"It's very strange, they move like ghosts," Arturo, a waiter in Avenida Jimenez de Quesada told the Daily Mail.

"Tell me what they look like if you catch them!"

Locals in Bogota and Cartagena appeared disinterested, with some saying: "They're nothing special" and "who cares?"

A street trader said: "I know about your [late] Queen but I'm not familiar with these guys."

While Colombia's vice president, Francia Marquez endorsed the couple and paid compliments to Harry and Meghan.

Working with Archewell Foundation, Marquez planned a programme of events, which were trailed by her office.

The vice president said: "The visit of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex represents an alliance committed to change [and an] opportunity to understand the dimension of the social transformations necessary in Colombia to continue building a country that respects diversity."

"Perhaps the backdrop matters not. They [the Sussexes] seek cultural relevance and want to make an impact," a senior Opposition politician in Bogota told The Mail on Sunday.

"They talk of being a global brand, so it doesn't really matter where they go in the world to highlight their causes."

Marquez's predecessor, former Colombian vice president Francisco Santos added: "I cannot understand for the life of me why they [Meghan and Harry] are here."

He added: "Who else will she bring here on the basis of watching Netflix? She will wrongly assume it will improve her public image. But there is nothing in this trip for the duke and duchess."
