The Duchess of Sussex has amassed 1.5m followers on Instagram

Meghan Markle is facing an awkward dilemma just 13 days after relaunching her social media presence.

The Duchess of Sussex made her return to Instagram on New Year's Day under the handle @meghan.

She shared a video, which was filed by Prince Harry, of her drawing 2025 in the sand on a beach in California.

The Duchess of Sussex has since used the account for two other major announcements.

The first was to drop the official trailer for her Netflix series titled 'With Love, Meghan'.

The second was to share a heartbreaking video tribute to her beloved rescue dog Guy who died recently.

The Duchess of Sussex has amassed 1.5m followers on Instagram since her return and has seen a strong level of engagement on her posts since returning to the platform.

However, less than two weeks after her return to Instagram, Meghan alongside her husband Prince Harry issued a strongly worded statement slamming Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg has unveiled plans for Meta to ditch its fact-checking programme as well as diversity and inclusion initiatives.

The Sussexes condemned the decisions, saying in their statement that the moves should "should deeply concern us all."

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been campaigning regarding online safety for many years and recently launched a group to help support parents who had lost children due to the negative effects of social media.

However, Meghan's stance on Meta also puts her in an awkward position in engaging with the platform.

The Duchess of Sussex clearly intended to use her Instagram account frequently having posted on the platform three times in 13 days.

Meghan may have also been intending to use Instagram as a marketing tool for Sussexes projects directly to her one and a half million followers.

It was where she chose to release the trailer for her anticipated Netflix series, which has been postponed from January 15 to March 4 due to the fires in California.

However, it will look very strange if Meghan continues to engage with and potentially profit off one of Meta's major social media platforms after issuing such a strongly worded statement condemning the company.

Equally, walking away from Instagram within one month of returning to the platform could be seen as admitting an embarrassing miscalculation from the former soap opera actress.

It would also result in losing a valuable asset for boosting engagement and awareness of Meghan's projects directly to an audience interested in the duchess.

Meghan faces a crucial crossroads just 13 days into 2025 and one that could have an impact on how successful the next 12 months are for the Duchess of Sussex.
