King Charles has joined forces with Princess Kate's photographer for a new portrait, released to mark Burns Night.

The King wore a tartan kilt, the traditional attire of Scotland, as he stood in the library at Balmoral Castle.

The image, taken in autumn last year, was released by Buckingham Palace to mark Burns Night, an annual celebration to commemorate the life and legacy of Scotland's National Bard, Robert Burns.

The event is celebrated around the UK on January 25.

Alongside the portrait, posted by the Royal Family on social media, a caption read: "Wishing those celebrating a very happy #BurnsNight tonight."

The Palace also credited the Prince and Princess of Wales's private photographer, Millie Pilkington.

The Dorset photographer, described as "one of the UK's most respected and accomplished portrait photographers" on her website, took intimate shots of Prince William and Princess Kate for their royal wedding in 2011.

Pilkington has previously snapped shots of senior members of the Royal Family, including Queen Camilla and the King.

She has also taken several personal photographs of Prince William, Princess Kate and their three children, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, nine, and Prince Louis, six.

Notably, Pilkington captured Prince William with all three children ahead of Father's Day last year.

Queen Camilla and King Charles recently enjoyed a period of downtime at Balmoral Castle following their Christmas celebrations at Sandringham Estate, confirmed by the Court Circular.

The historic castle, a special spot for the late Queen Elizabeth II, was host to Princess Anne's second marriage to Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence in December 1992.

It was also where the late Queen spent her final days leading up to her death in 2022, aged 96.

The portrait release comes days before King Charles is set to leave the UK for the first time this year.

Charles is planning to visit Poland for the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp for a service held on January 27.

The monarch, who branded the upcoming international trip as "so important," confirmed his visit during an engagement at Buckingham Palace earlier this month.
